Writer Alice Driver and I first met online. Which is only notable because I am not a person who strikes up online friendships. I thrive in real life but, for reasons I should probably explore in therapy, am generally dismal at other types of correspondence (as you may know if you’ve DM’d or emailed me or at’ed me in anyway)(if you have, know my lack of response is very much me, and very not you). I like to see the faces of people I’m speaking with.
For whatever reason, Alice was the exception to this rule! And so it was extra nice, when we met in person at the Texas Book Festival in November, to discover we also jibe irl. Even after I marched everyone out of a cocktail party to dinner because I was starving (albeit to Il Brutto, for one of the best dinners I had last year). After dinner, my friend Rebecca Soffer, who runs Modern Loss, googled Alice and over breakfast the next day was like, do you know how accomplished she is. As it turned out, I did. Which is very.
Alice is a serious investigative journalist. Most recently of The Life and Death of The American Worker: The Immigrants Taking on America's Largest Meatpacking Company. It’s both a courageous and important book, and compulsively readable. Which is not an easy trifecta to pull off. (Alice recently spoke with Ann Friedman about why we should be paying more for eggs, and also the recipe for chicken nuggets, which is as awful as you might imagine!)
